Some people think that in order to be an authentic leader that they must sacrifice a part of themselves. A part of who they really are.
That’s not true.
But
Then it IS true.
What’s that you say?
Let me clarify.
But, before I do let’s talk about what authenticity actually is and why it’s so critically important when it comes to you – the online entrepreneur.
AUTHENTICITY MEANS THAT YOU ARE 100% YOU.
No holds-barred. No filters. No exceptions. Unapologetically.
It means that you’ve said a big FUCK YOU to social conformity and trying to live life the way others told you should. That you conform only to the ORIGINAL you as you were born to be.
It means that you’ve given up trying to please everyone and instead that you’re focused only on pleasing those who get you. Your tribe. Your soul-level connections.
It means that you’re burned the rule book and said HELL FUCK NO to being a part of the status quo.
It means that you are true to your own personality, spirit and character without pretensions or false facades.
AUTHENTICITY MEANS THAT YOU ARE TRUE TO YOURSELF, UNQUESTIONABLY
True to your values.
True to your principles.
True to your belief systems.
And, in being so you are true to everyone you encounter or who experiences you.
IT MEANS THAT YOUR OUTER WORLD MATCHES PERFECTLY WITH YOUR INNER WORLD. NO CONTRADICTIONS.
That whoever you are behind closed doors is the exact same person you are when you show up in public, online or with your tribe and clients.
In short.
BEING AN AUTHENTIC LEADER MEANS THAT YOU ARE REAL IN ALL AREAS OF YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR LIFE
That you lead by example.
That you lead from the front.
That you are mindful.
That you are aware.
That you know exactly who you are at a core level.
That you are awakening into consciousness.
That you love yourself exactly who you are.
That you accept yourself as you.
And.
That you also expect others to do the same.
But.
If they don’t.
You’re cool with that because they’re simply not a part of your soul-level tribe.
They’re simply not your people.
AS AN AUTHENTIC LEADER IN THE ONLINE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPACE YOU HAVE A MASSIVE RESPONSIBILITY… OR SHOULD I SAY… PURPOSE
Because it is your role to show the hundreds of thousands of others out there who are struggling to be true to their authentic selves that is is PERFECTLY acceptable to be a little left of centre.
To feel.
To think.
To behave.
Differently to those in the online space – in the world as a whole.
That it’s OK to not try to change yourself to be the person others expect you to be…
That there are soooo many different types of people out there and that that too is OK.
That as human beings we are all vastly different and unique and that that too is OK.
That there is a tribe of like-minded individuals out there waiting just for you… To show up as the REAL you. Because they need you to lead them.
That it is OK to break the mould and stand out proudly as yourself because your soul-level tribe and clients REALLY only want to deal with you because you are REAL and TRUE.
And they love the fuck out of you for being original. For being you. For giving them permission to do the same.
So.
How can you go from struggling to stand out and show up as your authentic self?
What steps should you take?
How can you become an authentic leader in life and in business?
HERE ARE MY RECOMMENDED 5 STEPS TO BECOMING THE AUTHENTIC LEADER YOU WERE BORN TO BE:
1. Embrace Leadership Like You Embrace Life
People want to follow and they want to follow someone who stands strong in their values and beliefs. They want to know that they fit in. And they want to share in your vision and your purpose.
So let them.
Tell them who you are.
Tell them what you stand for.
Tell them what you stand against.
Share with them your big picture vision about life and business.
Let them know what your life purpose is and why that is important to you.
Have the courage to speak up unashamedly about your vision and your purpose and encourage your soul-level tribe to be a part of it.
2. Serve Your Purpose and Your Vision and You Will Serve Your Tribe
Know at a core level that you are on the right path. Align yourself with it and do not waiver from your commitment to the cause… the vision and the purpose. Ever. No matter what.
Maintain integrity in your purpose and don’t be afraid to remove those from your tribe who are upsetting the apple cart (so to speak).
If people are questioning you.
Your values.
Your beliefs.
Your vision.
Your purpose.
Your loyalty.
Show them the way out of your community. Stand firm in your integrity and your soul-level tribe will stand firm with you.
3. Be Unafraid Of Vulnerability
I’m not saying you must be weak. Quite the opposite.
If you’ve hit a bump in the road.
If you’ve gotten slightly derailed.
If you’ve failed or faltered.
If you’ve fucked up.
If you’ve been lead from your path.
Share that with your tribe.
A true leader – a really authentic leader – understands that not everything goes exactly to plan. That even they can and do make mistakes.
And they’re not afraid to admit that.
Because:
They know that in every misstep or failure there is a valuable life/business to be learned.
They know that by being completely honest and transparent with their soul-level tribe that the understanding and loyalty they get in return is second to none.
4. Always Be Honest
Don’t hide your challenges – share them with your audience just like you do your victories.
If you’ve hired a salesperson and it didn’t work out – let your people know that. They love to know that you are imperfect just like they are.
But go deeper than that.
Tell them where you went wrong. What the problems were. How you discovered it. How you managed the situation.
And.
Accept your part in the situation and share the experience to build a deeper connection with your soul-level audience. And in an effort to help them to be better people, better leaders themselves.
5. Take Ownership Of Everything
You are responsible for every single thing that happens to you. Own that.
And don’t be afraid to publicly admit and talk about that.
If you don’t meet your sales goals – don’t blame your team. Own the fact that every SUCCESS as well as every FAILURE is your responsibility because you are the CEO. The LEADER.
When those you are leading see you NOT take full responsibility, they won’t either.
It’s a simple sift in mindset.
Those times when things haven’t worked out as you’d wished simply reflect on how your leadership allowed it to happen and then find a way to fix it and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
After all.
True and authentic leadership IS NOT about blame. It’s about getting results.
6. BONUS: Cut Yourself Some Slack
Authentic leadership means that you’ve gotta love yourself. Show yourself some compassion.
Don’t beat yourself up over stuff that doesn’t work out the way you would have liked.
Instead, remember all of the positives you have going on for you in business and in life.
It’s OK for things to not work – those times are when massive shifts in mindset and growth take place.
A risk taker. A creator.
And in being so there is always room for things to go wrong.
You are human after all. And we are perfectly imperfect!
